Community Peace Officer

COMMUNITY PEACE OFFICER

The Town of Athabasca Community Peace Officers (CPOs) are committed to serving and protecting the Town of Athabasca. Community Peace Officers are appointed by Alberta’s Solicitor General and Ministry of Public Security under the Alberta Peace Officer Act, to enforce specific municipal and provincial legislation with a focus on community involvement and public education.

The majority of the Community Peace Officers time is being spent on animal control and unsightly properties under the Community Standards bylaw. These officers also act as the Business License officers when required. Other Provincial legislation enforced by the Athabasca Community Peace Officers includes inspections and enforcement under the Agricultural Pests Act and Regulation and the Weed Control Act.

Working closely with the local RCMP detachment, CPOs provide services in municipal bylaw education and enforcement, traffic management and enforcement of relevant provincial statutes. CPOs are given limited powers and must not be confused with RCMP officers, who have a much broader range of authority.

FILING A BYLAW OR VIOLATION COMPLAINT

Residents wishing to lodge a complaint about a potential bylaw infraction or violation or who wish to request assistance should contact the Community Peace Officers directly at 780-675-2063 or the RCMP at 780-675-5122. In an emergency, call 911.

All complaints are addressed in a timely manner and on a priority basis.
